What does a Big Mac cost when we measure the price in bitcoin? See Norwegian price observations in kroner and bitcoin from 2009.
Prices are Norwegian observations from The Economist's Big Mac dataset, available under CC BY 4.0. We selected Norway and converted the prices from NOK to bitcoin. The dates are the source observation dates.
The chart shows history from 2009. The points are actual measurements, and the lines connect them as a visual guide. We do not invent new price observations between measurements. The latest observation is not necessarily today's store price.
BTC price = NOK price ÷ the BTC/NOK rate on the observation date. The day must have ended in Norwegian time. A missing rate creates a gap in the BTC series, while the NOK price is kept.
The USD price is the NOK price divided by the Norges Bank USD/NOK rate on the observation date. Weekends and holidays use the latest rate for up to seven days.
From 2024K1 we use collected trading volume from our own database: the sum of NOK divided by the sum of BTC for positive daily volumes, including historical JuJu figures. The source transition is the same as for housing prices, metals and iPhone. Later database gaps are not filled with external rates.
Before the transition, we use daily BTC/USD from Blockchain.com multiplied by USD/NOK from Norges Bank. The latest USD/NOK rate may be carried forward for up to seven calendar days. Bitcoin prices are never carried forward.
The full price history is checked daily at 12:15 Norwegian time to capture revisions. The website may cache responses for five minutes. External exchange-rate history is updated explicitly as needed. The timestamp below is for the source check, not the date the price was measured.
